Everyone who takes disasters seriously will always have a plan on how to survive. Whether it is a flood, earthquake or hurricane, people will have a plan. So why don’t people have plan is for a zombie apocalypse, they never take it seriously. True it may not happen but government specialists always say the odds of Grímsvötn (Iceland Volcano) erupting was unlikely and just look at what happened, they say there wouldn’t ever be a nuclear meltdown and look at Chernobyl, the effect are still felt today. Now yes these were isolated incidents but they still happened. I'm not saying you should be on red alert at all times with an emergency pack stashed away. I’m saying that you should have a simple grasp of what to do and a routine, we do it for fires so why not do it with zombies. I will give you a "Zombie Apocalypses for Dummies" guide with simple steps, guidelines, tips and rules. Now never follow my guide step by step, you surroundings are an important factor. Do you live in the centre of a city? A suburb? The countryside? Knowing the answer to this simple question is key.
I’m not explaining an action plan; I am simply pointing out what you should look out for. Another quick tip is to not tell a lot of about your strategy, it’s your plan, if other people stole your plan you could be left with nothing.
Knowing the enemy:
There are a few simple changes between the classic zombies and new wave, the main difference is the speed in which they move, as the original tales stated that zombie are every slow unless they right up against flesh (dinner) New wave are capable of running and you will be forced to run. These are the differences but there are the fundamentals of a zombie. How the zombie apocalypse starts to important, is it a virus, is it only transferred through bites? Black magic? Could it be air born and it will take affect when you die, regardless of bites. At the end of they it doesn’t make a difference but can a handy piece of information at later events. The number one fact is you must destroy the brain, simply cutting off the head does not count and you are just left with a head trying to nibble on your ankles. You can shoot the body as much as you wish and cut off as many limps but killing the brain is the only solution. This is absolutely zombie 101 and if you forget this is just embarrassing. Now despite what new wave adaptations suggests Zombie and thick and no grasp of simple tasks, opening doors, climbing ladders, swimming are all impossible, making their way up stairs is a grey area but if they can it would them a tell of a long time. Though with their minds numbed they then revert to animal instincts and their senses are heightened, like any other feral beast. Hearing and smelling and improved. For this guide I will be focusing on classic zombies but I may make reference to new wave for extra security.
The first 6 hours:
The very beginning is crucial to knowing what you’re facing. Reports will come through about violent attacks and people being bitten. You should use the radio and not the TV. The TV can admit a lot of noise and attract unwanted attention, listen to the radio at a low volume but do not have everyone sitting around listening. Soon government broadcasts will begin to be played informing the public of the situation and instructions on what to do next but these are usually wrong and should not be taken completely into account. Over the next few days, or even hours, there will be news reports and broadcasts but these will stop all together. Realistically within these 6 hours you should already be packed and left, though you may carry a portable radio with you to keep up until everything goes out.
Weapons
In TV shows and films to do with zombies the characters usually have a gun but in the ‘real’ situation this would be very unlikely. If you live in a country or state where gun ownership is legal then it may be possible, however in these circumstances there are some issues. You may consider going to the gun store but hundreds of other people would have gotten the same idea. You would get there and the place would be stripped to the bone, either that or the owners would want to keep everything for themselves and would stop anyone who tried to take anything. From the get go, guns are not the weapons you want to use because guns are load, very load. Say you’re sneaking through a street and see a single zombie in your way, you shoot and that attracts a horde of them and then you’re in real trouble. Now if you can get 1 pistol it would be recommendable. You’d be able to fire in extreme situations and also as a last resort, shot yourself before you can be eaten. The weapon that is your best option is a blunt object. A crowbar or steel baseball bat, a wooden bat would split over time, are good choices. Swords and axes would not work because, unlike popular culture suggests, you would have to have fantastic upper body strength you cut through the body, otherwise your weapon gets stuck. Good places to grab blunt weapons are sport stores are hardware stores.
Where/Where not to go
There are a lot of places not to go in the apocalypse, some more obvious than others. A definite no goes is a hospital. At first the infection would be considered as just a serious illness, like swine or bird flu. People would be piling into hospitals for treatment, it would take a moment for someone to turn and with people turning into zombies in a crowded hospital it would be a bloodbath. So at no point should you travel into a hospital ever, even if you or a member of your group is ill, ransack a pharmacy.
As news reports will state, there will be a military evacuation centres and this is a definite no go. You will turn up and one of two things will happen. 1: just like the hospital there would be at least one infected person within the crowd that would be packed around trying to get on helicopters (I’m just guessing they would use helicopter) People would turn and it would become a massacre. 2: As military history has shown, the army and government will look at the bigger picture. All survivors wishing to get out would be rounded up and killed (most likely shot) to stop the infection from spreading.
A shopping mall has been proven to be a poor place to go to. It is at its worst just as the apocalypse beginning to strike fear in society. People ransack the mall for supplies, some buying while others being smart and looting. Again with people packed together in a condensed building it would lead to a feeding frenzy, for the zombies that is. Again, if you need to gather food, use smaller shops in the out skirts, even in an apocalypse it’s always good to support local independent own stores instead of the big chain stores.
In general being in an urban area is a danger zone. Multiple alleys with lots various blind spots are the perfect place for zombies. No matter what country cities will be densely populated, for example in France a majority of the population lives in the greater Paris area. So I’d advise that you don’t remain in or travel to a city.
Also suburban areas are also a poor place to be. Hundreds of houses neatly packed together in a line will possible a family within each house, usually two parents with approximately 3 children. And so those who may feel safe just outside the city are in just as poor a situation.
Never settle down
As popular culture suggests, you should find a place to stay and secure it for you to live there for the rest of your life. This however is completely wrong. Say you barricade yourself into your house, you board up all your windows and doors. You may have barricaded the house so the zombies can’t see you but that doesn’t stop them from hearing or smelling you. So they come and surround your house and that’s when you have a serious problem, you have no way out. If you set up shop somewhere you still need resources, food, water and such. Eventually you’ll run out of them and you won’t be able to get any more because you’re surrounded. Game Over. Now if you are someone that has taken the possibility of an apocalypse of any kind seriously you will have a stockpile of food to last you until you die and how the current life expectancy in the UK is 80 (78 in US) you would have a lot of food. Sure you might be able to survive but then you face another problem, insanity. You spend the rest of your days locked in an small isolated space with no one (or a few people) as company everything becomes a routine, mundane and this would lead you to psychological problems.
What I would recommend is to travel and never set up camp for more than a week. Make you way across the countryside and live for longer than most other people.
*Quick Tip* Never use a vehicle like a car as your main mode of transport as they produce too much sound. Travel on foot or on a bicycle instead.
There is the possibility that you could settle down after 10 years or so. You could settle on a farm but the geography is very important. It must be on flat land so that you can see anything coming and there must be no trees or wooded areas close to the farm.
